Unintentional injuries claim close to 300 lives every month in the United States – and that’s just for children under the age of four. Although these years can be the most precious for parents because of a toddler’s unceasing desire for discovery, there are inherent dangers around the house which can result in preventable tragedies.toddler

Here are some tips to help prevent falling injuries around the house and in subsequent issues we will write about other preventable dangers. Remember, even a child-proof house doesn’t replace the need for reliable supervision.

• Stairs should have safety gates on both the top and bottom. The top gate should use hardware which is screwed into the wall. Toddlers should be taught to go down stairs backwards.

• Keep stairs clear of toys, and clutter.

• Keep chairs away from windows and balconies. Never open a window that’s within reach of a child and always keep windows locked. Install window guards on windows above the first floor.

• Put double sided tape or foam padding under area rugs to prevent them from slipping out from under foot.

• Use tub mats to help little ones keep a secure footing when in the tub.

• Secure free-standing furniture like bookcases and t.v. stands to the wall.

• Don’t allow toddlers to play in the kitchen when cooking – pans, pots and cups containing hot contents can fall on them.

• Don’t allow toddlers to play on furniture like couches, tables, chairs, benches and counter tops.

• Keep extension cords clear of walking areas where a toddler can trip.

• Keep appliance cords from dangling over the counter top. They are just too tempting to be pulled.
