Acupuncture isn’t all needles. It can be an alternative way to address colic, common colds, asthma, earaches, eczema and more.

Acupuncture needles for children?…YES!!! You can treat children with needles quite effectively, and no… it isn’t ouchie. However, in Oriental medicine, we usually administer treatment without needles using a Japanese acupuncture method known as shoni-shin.  It is a technique using rhythmic stroking, rubbing, tapping and/or pressing the skin to produce a variety of gentle stimulation sensations along the channel pathways of the body. Rounded tools, including stones, shells, jade, silver or gold probes are typically used. Shoni-shin is well received by both infants and children up to 10 years old.  Giving acupuncture to preteens into the teenage years is also a healthy solution, especially in those transitional periods.

Pediatric acupuncture is well tolerated, safe & effective and doesn’t leave the child with undesirable side effects.  It addresses conditions from colic to common colds, asthma, to earaches to digestive issues such as constipation & diarrhea. It has even shown success in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), allergies, eczema, and hives.  It has the ability to address emotional disturbances like anxiety that can lead to more health concerns such as night frights, bedwetting or stuttering.

Acupuncture via shoni-shin work by understanding that a child’s bio-energetic systems are in the “yang” phase and not fully developed, meaning their energy (Qi) moves very quickly & on the surface. Because of this they can easily be influenced so their response to treatment is readily experienced. However, because they are still developing they are susceptible to invasion.  Hence, acupuncture is a great resource to harmonize, balance and strengthen the child’s immune system making it strong enough to fight & ward off disease pathogens.  It is highly recommended for a baby/toddler to receive wellness acupuncture prior to being exposed to social environments such as a preschool or daycare.  The use of Chinese herbal medicine is also an invaluable resource used to treat children’s ailments. Strengthening the child decreases illness!  At I’ao Acupuncture & Spa come and receive baby/keiki wellness acupuncture and improve the overall wellbeing of your child.  See them thrive without the harmful side effects of harsh medications and benefit from the wisdom of Oriental medicine.
