New Environmental Leadership Camp for 10-12 Graders

Maui Huliau 2

From July 11-14 the Maui Huliau Foundation, an environmental education non-profit serving Maui’s youth, will offer a new Environmental Leadership Camp for local students in grades 10-12.

Students will eat and prepare meals made from 100% locally sourced ingredients while learning about environmental issues that impact the island from experts in the field. Maui Huliau

Two alumni of Maui Huliau’s environmental youth leadership programs are organizing the practical, 4-day camp to create an immersive experience in sustainable living focused on zero-waste practices and eating locally.

“I was inspired to work on this program because of the knowledge and growth I personally gained as an environmental steward through other Huliau programs,” said Hiʻilei Casco, now an Environmental Science major at Cornell University. “I think it’s important that I contribute my own passion and knowledge to further enrich the lives of younger ambassadors, encourage their participation in sustainable living, and share how fun and rewarding a leadership program can be for high school students” said Casco.

“I am looking forward to exploring our local farms, apply what I’ve learn in university, eating delicious local food, and spending time with youth that are interested in helping our environment.” said Hannah Shipman, now an Environmental Science major at University of Kent in London.

The new program will also cover issues beyond agriculture, including marine debris, watershed protection and climate change. Participants will also learn about different career paths in environmental studies, farming and ecosystem management. Apply by July 3 at http://www.mauihuliaufoundation.org/summercamp/.
