The 8th Annual Maui Children and Youth Day

The 8th Annual Maui Children and Youth Day celebrating families with keiki from preschool through middle school is just around the corner. Maui Children and Youth Day is a free, fun, family event co-sponsored by Kihei Youth Center and held at Kenolio Recreational Center in Kihei on October 11 from 3:00pm – 8:00 pm.

From crafts, games, keiki ID, demonstrations to giveaways and more, this free event is filled with fun for the whole family. Keiki who complete the treasure hunt game by visiting booths complete with activities to engage and educate, may even win a prize! There will be food booths, too, that benefit South Maui youth clubs.

All families and their keiki are welcome! Maui’s annual festival coincides with the statewide celebration of October as Children and Youth month. For additional information, contact the Kihei Youth Center at 879-8698.

Fins & Flippers Tour Upgrade

Join a knowledgeable Ocean Naturalist and discover fascinating facts about sharks and sea turtles. The tour includes a behind-the-scenes visit to the Aquarium’s wet laboratory and chance to observe the feeding habits of sharks and sea turtles. Fees are applicable to parents and guardians accompanying children on the tour. Space is limited and advance reservations are recommended. $10 per person plus admission. Talk Story & Hula Lessons with Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana

Visitors to Maui Ocean Center will have an opportunity to hear from Maui Ocean Center’s Hawaiian Cultural Advisor Kahu Dane Maxwell and take in a hula lesson. Kahu Dane Maxwell and ‘Ohana (family) will conduct a talk story session and hula lesson at the Hawaiians and the Sea exhibit. This activity is complimentary with aquarium admission and appropriate for all ages. Schedule subject to change.

Sleep with the Sharks, Aquarium Sleepover

5:30pm until 8am the following day

Children, ages 8-13, are invited to experience the Aquarium after dark! During the sleepover, participants will get to explore Hawaii’s fascinating underwater world at night with hands-on discovery lessons and much more. Fee of $60 plus tax per child includes meals and souvenir. Aquarium members receive a 15% discount. Advanced reservations are required as space is limited; call (808) 270-7075.

Enjoy a relaxed afternoon on the lawn as acclaimed ‘ukulele musicians fill the air with island music! Renowned ‘ukulele advocate and teacher Roy Sakuma will serve as M.C. to help us celebrate Hawai‘i’s beloved instrument. In the line-up so year: Sam Ahia, ‘AHAmele (from SFBay area) , Nick Acosta, Nelly & Daniel Baduria, Kamakakehau Fernandez, Paula Fuga, Raiatea Helm, (**) The Hula Honeys, Aidan James, Willie K, Andrew Molina, Brittni Paiva, Taimane, Tamlyn Tamura, and YOZA – as well as some of our talented senior and students, such as the Kalama Intermediate Ukulele Band with Benny Uyetake and the Seabury Hall Hawaiian Ensemble, lead by Jon Toda. Fine ‘ukulele will be featured as doorprizes. The festival also features displays of made-in-Hawaii arts and crafts and ‘ono-licious island foods available for purchase.
