photo (2)-Uncle Wayne+new Band 2013

In celebration of the 2014 HSPLS Children’s Summer Reading Program, “Uncle Wayne” Watkins and the Howling Dog Band will be featured performers at nine selected public libraries on Lanai, Maui, Molokai, and Oahu from June 20 to July 12.  Admission is free.

“Fizz, Boom, Read” is this year’s program theme which will offer children the opportunity to experiment with building lava lamps, launching rockets, and creating a solar system mobile.  These activities and the special “Hardware Science” event currently underway at selected libraries will provide keiki with a fun learning experience about Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math (STEAM) concepts.

Keiki ages 3 and older, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, are invited to experience an energetic, educational, and entertaining performance by Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band.  “Uncle Wayne” Watkins, an Early Childhood educator and musician, has been sharing lively sing-along concerts for young children and families in Hawaii for 20 years.  His songs have catchy tunes and simple to-the-point lyrics with messages of caring for each other, caring for the Earth, and having fun.  His Band adds a whole new dimension to his original music by including a variety of instruments.

Performances are sponsored by the hosting libraries’ Friends chapters; travel arrangements to Lanai and Molokai are sponsored by the Maui Friends of the Library, and travel to Maui is sponsored by the Kay A. Edwards Memorial Fund.
