MUSICIANS OF SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY AT SEABURY HALL

SF musicians sm

On Saturday, August 10, 7:30pm, at  Seabury Hall – A’ali’ikuhonua Creative Arts Center – Ebb & Flow Arts present CHAMBER MUSIC FROM SAN FRANCISCO. Leading musicians from San Francisco Symphony – Sarn Oliver, Mariko Smiley, violins, David Kim, viola, and Sebastien Gingras ‘cello – perform string quartets from the 20th & 21st centuries.

The event is FREE ADMISSION. There will be a 6:30 pre-concert discussion.

“We are excited to bring this captivating group to Maui, thanks to a second year of support from Makana Aloha Foundation”, says Robert Pollock, Executive Director of E&FA. “The program contains twentieth century ‘classics’by Stravinsky and Shostakovich,  a work by E&FA’s Honorary President, Dr. George Walker (www.georgetwalker.com) – the first African-American to win the Pulitzer Prize in Music, and world premieres by a member of the group, Sarn Oliver, composer and violinist (www.sarnoliver.com)”, he adds.

A word about the program:

Stravinsky (www.igorstravinsky.com) wrote his ground-breaking “Three Pieces” for string quartet in 1914. Shostakovich(http://shostakovich.hilwin.nl)) wrote his “String Quartet #8” in 1960. This work is often called autobiographical because Shostakovich used a theme based on the first letters of his name.  He also dedicated the work: ‘In Remembrance of the Victims of Fascism and War’. Sarn Oliver offers two premieres of his music: “Transparency and Transcendance”, and “Undertow” (for electric string quartet). The second movement of George Walker’s “String Quartet #1” (1946) is his best known piece, sometimes called “Lyric” for strings. But the whole three movement quartet is a stirring and beautiful work, and will receive an energetic performance on August 10.

The long-awaited A’ali’ikuhonua Creative Arts Center on the campus of Seabury Hall – 480 Olinda Rd.,  Makawao – opened in September 2012. It is an elegant and innovative venue for concerts. It is well worth the trip just to experience this remarkable new facility. (www.seaburyhall.org)
