The Hawaii College Planning for Maui Families will be held on Monday, April 13 from 5:00-7:00pm at Maui High School.  The event is free to attend and open to 9th through 12th grade families and will be split up into two parts:

  • From 5:00-6:30pm we will be hosting two college planning information sessions.  college for kids
  • The college fair will be from 6:00-7:30pm.

College Planning for Maui Families- Break Out Sessions (5:00-6:30pm)
Session 1:
Financial Aid 101 (rooms B102 and B103) University of Hawaii Maui College Financial Aid Office
Between the acronyms and deadlines financial aid can be very confusing.  Maui College financial aid officers will break down each step of the financial aid process for attendees.

Scholarship and WUE Information (room B104) Lyle Irimata, Educational Opportunity Center
Interested families will acquire information on preparing for and accessing scholarships and will learn about the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program requirements.

NCAA – The Student Athlete  (Room B105) Chad Eickhoff, Northen Arizona University, Enrollment Services and Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach
We will discuss eligibility center, timelines, how to contact coaches, and how to build an athletic resume.

Choosing a College For You (Room B106) Kirk Koenig, University of Oregon – Senior Associate Director of Operations
Fit is essential when looking at colleges and universities.  In this session, attendees will learn how to research schools, what characteristics distinguishes a college or university, and when and how to start the multi-faceted application process.

Art School/Portfolio (Room B107) Brennan Dignan, Cornish College of Arts and Emilio Reyes, Savannah College of Art and Design
This presentation will focus on everything you wanted to know about art school, but were afraid to ask.  Learn about the different majors, types of degrees, various program designs, and the admission portfolio. Sample artwork will be analyzed to demonstrate what schools might look for in a portfolio.  Bring some samples from your own portfolio for feedback.

Essay Workshop (Room B108) Joe Bezousek, Creighton University – Associate Director of Admissions
Attendees will learn what admissions officers are looking for in their college essay.  Learn how to create both unique and dynamic essays that will standout to admissions officers.

Session 2:
Financial Aid 101 *see description above* (room B102)

Translating Financial Aid Award Letters (room B103) Kilohana Miller, University of Hawaii Maui College – Director of Financial Aid
Kilohana will dissect financial aid award letters for attendees.  He will go over scholarships, grants, loans, and what it means to take out a loan.

Personal Finance and Budgeting for College (room B109) Dr. Tim Hansen, Financial Planner
With the increasing costs associated with financing a college education, attendees will learn key strategies to managing your personal finance and budgeting for future college expenses.

STEM Careers (room B110) Roger Collier, Robotics and STEM Director, St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School
Attendees will learn about STEM fields, the current job market, and educational requirements to pursue a STEM career.

Senior Student and Parent Panel (room B111)
Attendees will hear from high school seniors and parents about their senior year, the college application process, and how they selected their colleges.  Seniors and parents will share tips to navigate the application process and information they have acquired along the way.
