Plan ahead with your child–use a daily and or weekly calendar to talk about what is coming up and review it daily

Talk in advance about how things will go for specific upcoming events …. Include details–this is where your child will let you know what she doesn’t like and you can begin to problem solve in advance!

Be clear and consistent with boundaries

Give choices of 2 (you get to choose the choices) so that your child feels he has some say

Take “a break” when you or your child is in a heightened state

Make sure your child is calm before doing any negotiating or problem solving together

Use a white board or piece of paper to draw pictures or map out options

Have a range of ways for your child to communicate her idea (drawing, talking, comic strip…)

Avoid saying no–try to say what your child can do, not what he can’t

Empathize with your child’s perspective (even if you don’t agree)… repeat it back to her so she then knows you understand her perspective

Identify the emotion you think your child feels (this helps your child begin to talk about feelings rather than just reacting)

Let your child know it is ok to have a wide range of emotions, including being angry and model or offer suggestions on acceptable ways to communicate it

Be “perplexed” in order to engage your child in problem solving (rather than finding solutions for him)

Pace your day–give your child time to transition between activities.

However, as you get older it doesn’t seem so easy, right?

Having a good girlfriend–and yes just one is really all you need–can fulfill you in a way that nothing else can. A girlfriend helps you celebrate the wins, get over the losses, and navigate through life with a support network.

Where to find them

You can find girlfriends at work, via your kids, through a moms group like MOPs, or even online. Yes, online!

Forums, Facebook Groups, Yahoo groups and MeetUp.com are great places to find women who are in the same place in life as you. Recently had a new baby? Look for forums for new moms. BabyCenter.com has a wonderful forum and support network.

Online friends are special in their own way. Many times the friend doesn’t know your family so you can let it fly when you need to vent. If your friend lives far from you it opens up an opportunity to travel to where they live to meet one day.

Need a friend that’s local? Having a girlfriend that lives close to you is amazing for support, girls nights out and connecting your families. Local friends help you create memories and even new holiday traditions. Many of us on Maui are away from family and friends, so having a good girl friend on island is a life saver!

Here are some fun ways to stay in touch and enjoy time with your girlfriends

1. Set a Girls Night Out (aka GNO) for once a month. You can even do it at one of your houses, and just switch each month.

2. Schedule check-in time. Set a day of the week where you and your girlfriends chat on the phone or online or via skype. Make it an appointment and add it to your calendar so that you don’t miss it or let it slip by.

3. Snail mail. If your girlfriend lives far from you, send postcards to each other. The written word and receiving mail are still a super special way to stay connected even in our ever growing online world.

Spending time with the keiki is amazing but if your love tank is on low, the keiki can tell. Take time to reconnect on a date night once a month. Here are ten ideas to make it easy and fun!

1. Make it a lunch date. Not into babysitters? No worries, make it a date lunch while the kids are at school. (lunch can be better on the wallet too!)

2. Make it fun. Write a note on the bathroom mirror with an invite to coffee. Even if it’s just 30 minutes of uninterrupted time, it will do your relationship good.

3. Make it a picnic at home. After the kids have gone to sleep. Bring out a blanket, plop it on the floor and eat a yummy desert together with a glass of wine, tv off, maybe music on, and just hang or chat.

4. Bookstore love. One of the coolest and cheapest dates is a trip to a book store. Hit up Barnes & Noble, grab a cup of joe and peruse books together. Dream of travels in the travel section or just flip through a magazine.

5. Long distance love. Maybe your spouse had to head off island for an extended work trip or you’ve headed home for a long visit with family. Don’t let date night pass you by. Instead, set up at time to chat via facetime or skype once the kids are in bed so you can stay connected.

6. Mark it on the calendar! If you have a family calendar, write “Date night” in big bold letters. This way no one inadvertently makes plans for that night and the kids know well in advance that you’ll be taking some time out together.

7. Find a cool babysitter. Plain and simple, having a killer babysitter will make date night easier. The kids will be excited and you won’t have to worry.

8. Go double. Have some couple friends that you get along well with? Make it a double date. If they have kids the same age, have a babysitter watch them all together. This makes it fun for everyone and can be easier on the babysitter since the kids will keep each other busy. Plus you get great adult convo and get to connect with friends too!

9. Send the kids away. Does Tutu live close? Send the kids to her house so you and hubby can stay home. This is a fantastic option for a low budget date night.

10. Give your spouse a date night coupon book. Make it 12, one for each month, and use the ideas above to inspire you and what you’ll do.

Remember, date nights can be low budget & easy. It’s all about making sure you set aside time to reconnect. Make it a priority and have fun with it!

I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the Maui Academy of Performing Arts’ Spring Extravaganza, a warm celebration of our local keiki having fun while being – perhaps unawares – physically active. It was a beautiful display full of character-building self-satisfaction woven of more than a handful of tirelessly perfected moves. Notwithstanding all the hours of preparation, what greater joy can there be than to be lost in the moment, celebrating the uninhibited spirit that far too many of us are taught to squelch so we can fit society’s norms?

You may know that I’m a gymnastics coach. It’s my nature to get lost in time when helping to ignite the exploration process with any athlete of level, shooting for exiting that same process on Cloud Nine. There’s nothing quite like being in the presence of a young soul who, through movement of the body, experiences an epiphany. Awash in the sheer joy of physical accomplishment, the young person begins to want more of this self-euphoric feeling. As adults who care about the physical and mental well-being of our youth, it’s our mandate to be purposeful and relentless about placing directly in their paths these opportunities for healthy physical, mental, and emotional growth- these opportunities for euphoria.

Here’s an idea you can try at home that not only provides opportunities for physical, mental, and emotional growth, it builds a bonding experience between you and your child.

Don your best 80s gear, pull out Michael Jackson’s Thriller video and bust a move. You know the dance. Your kids probably know it too. Your kids may think you’ve gone crazy. So be it! What better way to get the family involved in a time of joyful, memorable movement? We’ve all seen Beyonce’s infectious “Single Ladies.” C’mon Dads, admit that you know the moves. Have enough guts to perform it with your little ones, complete in the black leotard like Justin Timberlake so hilariously did on Saturday Night Live. You may be igniting a dance career that will keep your young ones so occupied with healthy things that unhealthy things simply aren’t considerations.

If for no other reason, take the chance to do silly, fun, uninhibited things with your youth to keep them occupied with healthier choices. You’ll be planting living seeds that, by definition, must grow. Control the direction of that growth toward lifelong healthiness, toward keeping as many hours as possible occupied with something that’s loved on an uninhibited, euphoric level. Constantly monitoring and being involved in the growth toward what your child’s nature craves is a time-consuming process whose rewards far outweigh the risks of not taking that first chance.

Find what they love. Love it with them. Nurture their love for their activity. Build a physically, mentally, and emotionally strong child who’ll become physically, mentally, and emotionally strong adult who will bequeath the healthy cycle to their own children. Generations down the road, they’ll be saying, “Small town Maui. A happier place there never was.”

Including tuition, fees, room and board, the average cost at private colleges is nearing $35,000 per year and is increasing by nearly 5% annually (Source: Trends in College Pricing – 2009, The College Board). With this in mind, the projected cost of educating today’s newborn is staggering.

Consequently, whether you are considering a public or private college for your child, it is essential that your planning begin as early as possible. Many parents procrastinate because they feel the task is overwhelming, or they think that saving the required amount of money will force them to severely compromise their current lifestyle. While both of these concerns are legitimate, they need not stand in the way of establishing – and maintaining – an effective college funding plan.

The starting point for developing a plan is to understand the available funding options:

Scholarships. While certainly desirable, there is no way to predict whether your child will qualify for a scholarship.

Financial Aid. Usually in the form of loans, aid rarely covers total college costs.

Personal Income. Procrastinators generally expect to fund college expenses from current income. Would you be able to pay current tuition, out of your present personal income?

Personal Loans. While generally available, they could prove costly over the long run when total interest charges are considered.

Savings. This is the one funding option over which you have complete control. While it may not be easy for a young family to save, even small amounts can grow substantially through the effects of time and compounding. The longer you wait, the more difficult it may be to reach your funding goal.

Because of the uncertainty surrounding all funding options, except savings, it is critical to make personal savings the cornerstone of your college funding program. However, even a well-conceived savings plan is vulnerable. Should you become sick, injured or die prematurely, your savings plan could come to an abrupt end.

To protect against any of these unexpected events, life insurance is the only vehicle that can help assure the completion of a funding plan. In addition to the protection aspect of insurance, the tax-deferred buildup of cash values can be part of your college savings plan. Generally, distributions up to the contract’s cost basis are tax free. Moreover, loans in excess of the cost basis are also tax free as long as the policy remains in force.

Also of particular importance, life insurance cash values are excluded in the needs analysis formula for financial aid used by government agencies and most schools. This means you can build an asset without being penalized if applying for financial aid.

All of the potential sources should be considered when developing a college funding program.
In recent times, a vast amount of research has been done on the specific positive ways in which singing can improve your child’s live. The results of the research using Star Quality Singing method as a modality have been especially stunning, such as the ability seen with the use and addition of Star Quality singing to temporarily heighten spatial awareness and intelligence; its impressive power to improve your child’s concentration and increase speech abilities; its tendency to advance their reading as well as language skills among children who receive regular singing instruction; and the startling increase in SAT scores among students who sing. But Lani Starr’s Star Quality Singing method refers to more than just raising children’s test scores.

By learning to recognize and consciously implement the Star Quality Singing in your child’s life, you can:

• Stimulate brain growth

• Positively affect their emotional perceptions and attitudes.

• Reduce their level of emotional stress or physical

• Enhance their motor development

• Improve their language ability, including vocabulary

• Enhance their social abilities.

• Improve their reading, writing, mathematical,

• Improve their over all academic skills,

• Improve their ability to remember and to memorize.

• Helps them to creatively solve life’s most challenging problems even into adulthood.

• Gives them the tools to find inner happiness and peace even into adulthood.

It is amazing to know that singing which have been available to us throughout our lives can have such a powerful and wonderful effect on the mind, spirit and body. Yet the evidence is indisputable. Wisely used, singing can create a healthy happy and stimulating world for your family and profoundly enhance your child’s growth.
