Children learn the fine art of etiquette with dress up fun

All maidens have the potential to be royalty. Now there is a place on Maui where these girls can prepare to be a princess.

At the Princess Training Camp on Maui, young maidens will be taught how to conduct themselves like royalty, as well as discover the personal charm of being a princess. Janet King, mother of two girls, wanting the idea of fantasy, charm, and royalty to come alive, created the Princess Training Camp. "I was looking for something unique for my daughters to do on Maui. Because my girls love to dress up and pretend, I decided to start a “camp” based on this concept. I also want our children to realize what it’s like to be a princess from within themselves. The goal is to enhance children’s imagination, self-esteem, grace and poise, as well as learn important values such as kindness, sharing, perseverance and happiness. Most importantly, children will be taught that even when they are not wearing their crown, if they shine from within, they are a true princess."

The camp will include all the Pomp and Circumstance; including formal tea parties, dressing up in stunning gowns, and playing in an interactive castle and a secret garden full of hidden royal treasures. While attending the daily tea party, the maidens will be cultured on proper etiquette. They will gain pride and creativity while making their royal crafts. During the imperial games, they will learn princess manners and talents. And of course, singing and dancing will be a part of every festivity, including the puppet show. To encourage self worth and future ideals, the camp will conclude with an unforgettable and inspirational crowning for all maidens who attend. It’s all that a little princess could ever dream of.

The Princess Training Camp is now accepting maidens between the ages of 3-6 years old. The camp is two days, 3 hours each day. Two sessions of camp will be after the Christmas holiday, when kids are home from school and Queen Mommies may need a "break." So find your daughter's favorite princess gown, and her best slippers and join them for this magical event! Visit www.kingcamps.com or call King Camps to enroll at 874-0609.

Making gifts and memories at the same time

The "opportunity" of the holiday season is upon us again. The ideas of appreciation and gratitude are at the forefront of our minds even though these days may be hectic for the family.

Kids & Company in the Maui Mall makes it enjoyable, relaxing, and stimulating to create a meaningful gift that will touch that special somebody where it really matters.

Revamped in the last six months, Kids & Company - Maui Mall has been remodelled by owners Ladini Conder and Mario Salamone into an open art studio for ceramics, mosaics, print making and build-a-bear.

Most of the great high quality toys, books, and activity sets that patrons have enjoyed for the past 6 years have been moved to the Queen Kaahumanu Center location in order for the messy fun of creating works of art to take center stage.

Supplied with an endless array of clay plates, mugs, bowls, pitchers, animals and figurines, Kids & Company provides the space, support and guidance to make these bisque fired ceramics explode with color.
Designs are free-drawn or transferred from books, glazes are brushed on, and the painted pieces are then kiln fired into a glossy finish of food friendly, dishwasher safe beauty.

"Our desire is to offer a place where families — parents, children, and grandparents can get together and do an activity everyone will enjoy. A place where a family can bond with each other," says Mario.
Kids & Company can accommodate all sorts of groups from families, birthday parties, preschools, fund-raisers, and scouts, to ladies night out and parent get-aways.

"We have extended hours during the holiday season," explains Ladini, "from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. we’re always here. Some groups even come after hours. We’ve had girlfriends come in after closing, bring pupus and refreshments, and just relax, socialize and have fun glazing or making tile mosaics. It’s a great stress reliever."

Besides glazing pre-fired pieces, customers can create tile mosaics from beautiful pre-tumbled glass, or stuff their own cuddly animal in build-a-bear fashion.

The studio is child friendly with low tables and chairs and lots of space. Parents don’t have to worry about their child exploring and touching the supplies around them because that’s what they’re they for, to be used.
"It’s a very relaxing and stress free environment for parents. They don’t need to worry about their child exploring inside the store. Everything is at child level and is kid-friendly. They can touch and play all they want. If a child is really active, we just close the doors and let them have fun," says Mario.

Besides drop-in and group business, Kids & Company also offers an Art Camp during the school break. Last summer’s camp was a big hit with families. Ladini creates themed weeks which gives the children an exciting idea of what’s in store for the week. Themes like Pirates, Harry Potter, the Wizard of Oz, Self Portrait and Mask Making are appealing subjects children are interested in. The camps use different types of mediums, clay and paper mache, print making, glazing and others.

Although Kids & Company is a great place to create that special gift, it’s also great fun for families and friends to get together, spend quality connective time with each other and come away with a special use-every-day piece to remember that fun family time.

Holiday Favorite Features Young Maui Dancers

If this time of year gets you longing for sugar plum fairies and toy soldiers dancing to the music of Tchaikovsky, you’re in luck! Ballet Hawaii’s full-length production of Nutcracker, one of the most beloved holiday traditions, will be on stage at Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) December 1 (7:30 pm) and December 2 (2 pm).

This special production, featuring 138 children from Maui and several more Maui residents in adult roles, will showcase some of the most talented performing artists from the local communities. Principal dancers from the New York City Ballet, Joaquin De Luz and Megan Fairchild, will perform the lead roles. Additional dancers from Ballet Hawaii’s prestigious Oahu schools will also comprise the cast.

"We had tremendous interest in this production from all around the island," said Barry Jones, a teacher at Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA). Jones is rehearsing the Maui performers for this production.
"More than 300 dancers came for auditions. It was very exciting to meet so many talented dancers from right here on our island," she said. "Carden Academy in Pukalani had an outstanding turn out for the audition. We cast twenty-five students as a result. Sharing the stage with renowned talent from New York is a great honor for these young dancers," Jones continued.

Lyn Soma’s 11 year-old daughter Taylor, a 6th grader at Seabury Hall, dances the role of Marie. "Taylor is so excited to be a part of this experience," her mother said. "We know this will be the holiday event of the season and it's thrilling to have this high quality production come to Maui. There is such pride in knowing the children will be on stage with professional New York dancers and performing for family, friends and neighbors. We hope everyone will come to create memories of their own with this Nutcracker."

Ticket prices range from $25 - $45 and are available at the MACC Box Office or by calling 242-SHOW (7469) or online at www.mauiarts.org.
